Garmin-Asus confirms nuvifone G60 for sale this month in Taiwan, M20 soon after

Is this really happening? Are we all collectively in some sort of lucid, dreamlike state where Garmin-branded cellphones flow like water, or is this the real deal? Correct us if we’re wrong, readers — but if we’re reading this press release correctly, Taiwanese folks will have a crack at Garmin-Asus’ nuvifone G60 come the 27th of this month, just a few days from now; Singapore and Malaysia will have theirs meanwhile by the end of August, and Europe and the US are “on schedule” for the second half of the year (we hesitate to associate the phrase “on schedule” with this product, but we’ll let it slide this time). If WinMo is more your cup of tea, the M20 will be coming to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia in August as expected — the US isn’t on the roadmap for this one, but Europe should have it later this half. These phones have taken so long to arrive that they’ll be fighting an uphill battle against irrelevance — but with the reality that handsets will be all but replacing dedicated portable nav units in the coming years, it’s a play that Garmin’s gotta still be eager to make nonetheless. JVC’s NX-TC5 iPod dock with motion activated 4.3-inch LCD plays digital TV, not iPod video

Japan’s home to some pretty impressive shelf audio systems given the preponderance of well-mannered neighbors living side-by-side in tiny urban apartments. Today brings another, JVC’s latest addition to its NX-TV series, the 15 x 15 watt NX-TC5. Unfortunately, while the unit sports an iPod dock and 4.3-inch LCD, video playback is limited to its integrated 1Seg digital TV tuner or WMV video stored on USB media — not from Apple’s beloved. It does feature a swiveling front-panel for optimal viewing angle and motion-activated display in addition to 512MB of on-board storage for photos, an AM/FM tuner, and CD player with the ability to rip audio to MD or attached USB stick at 4x speeds. The TC5 is expected to hit Japan in late August for

SearchMe Searching For A Buyer

We’ve known that that visual search engine SearchMe has been looking for a new round of financing these last few months. But from what we hear they aren’t having a lot of luck closing that financing – something was on the table, our sources say, but fell through. As an alternative strategy, they’ve approached a number of possible buyers to see if they can close an acquisition of the company or its technology, multiple sources have confirmed. If a buyer can’t be found quickly, the site may shut down. The search engine first launched in March 2008, and has raised around $44 million in venture capital. Sequoia Capital has backed them from the start, beginning with a $400,000 seed round in 2005. SearchMe has an innovative visual approach to search that lets users scroll through screen snapshots quickly

AMD parties hard after shipping 500 millionth x86 processor

Get on down with your bad self, Mr. Spaceman — AMD just shipped its 500 millionth x86 processor! Shortly after the company celebrated 40 years of hanging tough and doing its best to overtake Intel , the outfit has now revealed that a half billion x86 CPUs have left its facilities over the past two score. We pinged Intel in order to find out just how that number stacked up, but all we were told is that the 500 million milestone was celebrated awhile back down in Santa Clara. We’ll just chalk the vagueness up to Intel not wanting to spoil an otherwise raucous Silicon Valley shindig. Classy. Automate Your Home Using ioBridge and Twitter

Earlier this week we brought you the story of the house that twitters . In this post we explore another experimental system that uses Twitter to automate tasks. Matt Morey , by day an engineer for Texas Instruments in Florida, has developed a two-way, home automation application using Twitter and ioBridge . We all know about Twitter, the now massively popular 140 character messaging service. ioBridge will be new to many. It’s a web platform for remote control and monitoring, which bills itself (no doubt with tongue in cheek) as “one step closer to Skynet .” Those with sensitive natures about the Singularity are advised to look away now. For the rest of you, let’s see what Matt has built using these two services

Android-powered HTC Click rumored to be crazy cheap unlocked

One more note about that Android-powered HTC Click that we saw in a gloriously-framed shot yesterday morning: it’s going to be cheap. It had been said all along that the Click would mark HTC’s first Android entry into the low-end fray (joining the Touch Viva on WinMo), meaning the sticker price would be kept to a minimum — but the Vietnamese forum that first brought you this picture is saying that we’re looking at somewhere between 5 and 6 million dong, which works out to $280 to $336 unlocked. That’s cheap enough to ensure that it’s free on contract virtually anywhere in the world where it’s sold, bringing Android to a whole new demographic. Now, just call us when the Hero’s down to $280, eh? Google Latitude on the iPhone? It’s Terrible, Use Brightkite

Google announced today that its location based social network Latitude is now available in-browser on the iPhone and many iPhone owners will no doubt give it a try. We’d recommend you check it out and then promptly download the app for Brightkite , a startup in the same sector. Brightkite is so full featured it makes Latitude look like a frustrating joke. Much has been written already today about Apple’s insistence that Latitude be accessed through the browser, instead of as a downloaded app. That’s hardly the only thing wrong with it. So far, it’s just plain terrible

Google Latitude finally makes it over to iPhone, as a web app

The iPhone has finally caught up with its BlackBerry, Windows Mobile 5.0, and S60 competition, at least as far as Google Latitude is concerned. The stalker-centric program is now available for Apple’s smartphone, but instead of coming as an App Store-approved download, it’s actually just a web-hosted app that grabs your location through Safari — a new trick care of iPhone OS 3.0 . As to why, the Official Google Blog explains Apple had some concern that people would confuse it for the native Maps app. We still don’t get why it couldn’t simply be added to Maps itself, but we’re not the multibillion dollar company, here. Go ahead, let your privacy cares away and direct your iPhone to the link below to see what all the fuss is about. Now it’s time to wait (im)patiently for Google Voice .

Loop-In Concept Allows Users To Surf on Sidewalks [Concept]

The Loop-In transportation concept hopes to combine the sensations of surfing and skating in to one device that users can use anywhere. The outside wheels have the ability to maneuver on a wide variety of surfaces and rotate independently of the board. The designers expect their wheel/board setup will give users the feeling of “pushing on a wave continuously”. Hopefully there are plans to manufacture the Loop-In soon, though I doubt it will be able to replicate the thrill of getting barreled. [ Tuvie ]

More Evidence of Cameras in Next Gen iPod Touch and Nano?

Don’t get too excited since Apple hasn’t confirmed any of this yet. After all we’ve seen plenty of iPhone nano pictures but the handset was never released. Today we’ve seen more pictures that suggest that the new iPod touch and the iPod nano will both come with a camera. Chinese manufacturers have more cases for
